In an effort to lower fuel consumption and pollution the Peruvian National Police (PNP) has introduced 3 wheeled motorbike patrol vehicles. These vehicles use less than 10% of the fuel consumed by the Toyota Landcruisers that were previously seen on the streets of Iquitos. Of course the carbon footprint left by these bikes is drastically reduced too. These 125cc Rapid Response Units can whisk through traffic jams and can enter some of Iquitos’s narrow streets. They are fully equipped with radio, loudspeaker, siren, first aid kit, rescue equipment and the passenger compartment has chain link fencing to ensure none of their passengers leave the vehicle until the right time. Incidentally these bikes cost about $4,000 compared to the $25,000 a Toyota Landcruiser costs. |
