It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of one of the great friends of Iquitos Maryke Sipkes. Maryke passed away at 6.10 p.m. on 8th August after fighting a long illness. Maryke came to Peru 27 years ago and over those years has done so much to help the unfortunate poor people that live here. Always with a smile and always ready to help. Untill 2006 Maryke was a staunch supporter of The Great River Amazon Raft Race and always insisted in providing and cooking the food on the support boat. In 2006 although very sick she made her friends take her to the raft race ceremony in the Fishing Club where she congratulated everyone. We were very fortunate to enjoy but a short time with Maryke and shall miss her very much.
