I have for some years been going to Iquitos hoping to find some good fishing, but have always left dissapointed, that is until now.
I arrived here in Iquitos with my friend Travis on the 17th of November and tried to find a fishing expert, not a tourist guide, but a real fisherman. I spoke to Aura Guzman who works at “Mad Micks Trading Post” on the lst block of Putumayo (by The Iron House). She put me in contact with Guillermo Perez. We told him that we wanted three days fishing returning each night to Iquitos and our hotel. He told us that for $60US each per day he would take us to locations where we would surely catch big Peacock Bass, these being our target species. The price included everything, the transport, fishing tackle, food and a plentiful supply of cold beer.
We left with Guillermo each day at 6.30 a.m. and returned each evening at 6.30 p.m.
Although we did not travel that far from the city, Guillermo surely does know his stuff, because on every day we went with him we were both delighted with our catch, we caught various number of different species, but the most important thing is that we caught Peacock Bass galore , some up to 4 kilos, and what sport they are, good eating too.
If you want to go fishing during your stay in Iquitos, Peru then we certainly recommend you contact Aura at Mad Micks and she will put you in touch with our hero, Guillermo.
If you are ever in Lima pop in and see me at “ The Old Pub ” in, Miraflores.
Good Luck,
Mike Ella
