Richard Fowler

Richard Fowler - American Naturalist living in the Peruvian Amazon. Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime?

PYRAMIDS OF PUSHARO, Manu, Peru

WHO:
Anyone interested in a wild adventure in the Madre de Dios Jungles of South Perú? If you are in good condition this could be a trip of a lifetime in some of the most beautiful country left on the planet. This trip could be for you.

Your expedition will be led by Richard Fowler, an American Naturalist and Guide that has been living and working in the jungles of the Amazon and Madre de Dios regions of Perú for over eight years. Richard received a great splash by Tom Ferral in the New York Times Book Review as he surfaced in the most recent book to be published about the Amazon, its jungles, its peoples, and medicine plants, “Trail of Feathers" by Tahir Shah. The book was also dedicated in his name.

What?:
The Pyramids of Pusharo were located by Land SAT KH-11 Satellite in the early 70's and photos indicated 12 pyramids located in the jungles of the Madre de Dios region of Perú. The few expeditions that have ever attempted to reach these pyramids met with difficulties with indians and rugged terrain. However, Richard , who knows this area, has a route in that only takes two or three days, mostly up a shallow rock creek with cool running water. We set-up camps on sandy beaches along the way, and supported by some of Richard's friends from the Machiguenga Indian village near by. (These indians are some of the same that have turned other expeditions back. Richard has spent months making in-roads with these people. They refer to him as a "Machigringo").

When?:
Approximately 3-4 trips per year, call or send e-mail for exact dates.

Where?:
The expedition will leave out of the sacred city of the Incas, Cuzco, located close to 11,000 feet above sea level in the Southern Peruvian Andes. We will receive you at the airport upon your arrival and escort you to your lodging and provide meals for you, etc. Everyone should plan to get in early by a day or two.

How?:
First phase of the trip is a breath taking adventure in itself as we take a bus or truck down 10,000 ft of Andian Mountians passing waterfalls and driving through mountain tunnels and cloud forest, awesome sceanery and overlooks nature at its best.

On arriving at the Madre de Dios River we cross to an indian village where we meet our porters, hunters & helpers. Then we spend the next three days making our way to the pyramids. We want several days to hunt, climb and explore this area as very few have ever analized or explored these monuments to any degree, so anything is possible. The biggest pyramid is about 450 ft. just a bit smaller than the Egyptian Pyramids. And these are covered in several hundred years of light jungle growth. With a mat of moss about 4 inches thick before you strike solid rock. Many species of plants are stunted as bonsia on the rock sides of the structures. There are two mountain ranges that run parallel to these pyramids and after climbing them will give you an awesome view of the pyramids. Dr. Carlos Newschwander says that they're too symetrical to be natural. A metal detector will be used to scan for gold which the Madre de Dios area is known for . The area is rich in wild life diversity that include tapir, havelina, jaguar, spectacled bear, macaws (which are everywhere) as well as many other birds, monkeys and fishes.
